Bonnie Tyler

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Bonnie Tyler is a celebrated Welsh singer known for her distinctive, husky voice.

Born Gaynor Hopkins on June 8, 1951, in Skewen, Wales, she grew up in a large family. Her father was a coal miner and a former serviceman. Her siblings listened to many different artists, such as Elvis Presley and the Beatles. This exposure helped shape her musical interests. Tyler eventually transitioned from a grocery shop worker to a global music icon. Her career is defined by her ability to adapt to different musical styles.

Her unique vocal tone was actually the result of a medical accident. In the spring of 1977, Tyler underwent surgery to remove vocal cord nodules. Her doctor ordered her to rest her voice for six weeks. During this recovery period, she screamed in frustration. This single moment created the permanent, raspy quality that became her trademark.

This sound helped her stand out in a crowded music industry. It became a key part of her artistic identity.

Tyler's early career involved several name changes and strategic moves. She first used the name Sherene Davis to avoid confusion with Mary Hopkin. In 1975, a talent scout named Roger Bell discovered her in Swansea. After signing with RCA Records, she chose the name Bonnie Tyler from a newspaper. Her debut single, "My! My! Honeycomb," did not find chart success. However, her next single, "Lost in France," reached number nine in the UK. This success led to her first appearance on the show Top of the Pops.

During the late 1970s, Tyler achieved significant international success. Her single "It's a Heartache" reached number four in the UK and number three on the US Billboard Hot 100. Her second studio album, Natural Force, was released in 1978. This album was certified Gold by the RIAA, selling over 500,000 copies. In 1979, she won the Grand Prix International at the Yamaha World Popular Song Festival in Japan. This award recognized her performance of "Sitting on the Edge of the Ocean."

The 1980s marked a major shift as Tyler moved into rock music. She collaborated with songwriter and producer Jim Steinman to create a powerful new sound. Steinman described his work for her as a "Wagnerian-like onslaught of sound and emotion." Their most famous collaboration was the single "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Released in 1983, it became one of the best-selling singles ever, with over six million units sold. The accompanying album, Faster Than the Speed of Night, topped the UK charts. It also sold over one million copies in the United States.

In the 1990s, Tyler found a new audience in mainland Europe. She worked with producer Dieter Bohlen to create a more mainstream sound. Her 1991 album, Bitterblue, was a massive commercial success in several countries. In Norway, the album achieved 4× Platinum status. It also spent eleven weeks at number one on the charts.

This version of her hit song topped the French charts. In 2013, she represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden.
