Often called the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll," she broke significant racial and gender barriers in the music industry. Her career was defined by immense vocal prowess and a commanding stage presence. These qualities helped her become one of the best-selling music artists in history. She sold an estimated 100 million records worldwide.

Turner's professional journey began in the 1950s in St. Louis and East St. Louis.

She first saw Ike Turner performing with his band, the Kings of Rhythm. She was so impressed that she asked to sing with them. In 1956, she took a microphone during an intermission and sang a B.B. King blues ballad. This performance led Ike Turner to ask her to sing more songs. He eventually taught her the technical aspects of vocal control and stage performance. Her first recording was in 1958 under the name "Little Ann."

In 1960, a major shift occurred during a recording session for the song "A Fool in Love."

The original planned singer did not show up for the session. Bullock suggested she sing the lead part instead. The producer, Juggy Murray, was so impressed by her "funky" sound that he bought the track. To create a stage persona, Ike Turner renamed her "Tina" because it rhymed with "Sheena," after the character Sheena, Queen of the Jungle. This era saw the formation of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. This ensemble included the Kings of Rhythm and a backing group of dancers called the Ikettes.

After enduring marital abuse, Turner ended her relationship with Ike Turner in the 1970s.

She then embarked on a solo career that led to a massive international comeback. In 1983, she released the hit "Let's Stay Together." This was followed by her fifth solo album, *Private Dancer*, in 1984. The album was a multi-platinum success. Its single, "What's Love Got to Do with It," won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1985. This song also became her only number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

Turner's success as a live performer was record-breaking.

Her Break Every Rule World Tour became the highest-grossing tour by a female artist in the 1980s. It also set a Guinness World Record for the largest paying concert audience, which was 180,000 people. Later, her Wildest Dreams Tour became the first tour by a woman to earn $100 million. Her Twenty Four Seven Tour in 2000 was the highest-grossing tour of that year. She finally retired from performing in 2009 after her 50th Anniversary Tour.

Her life began in the rural community of Nutbush, Tennessee.

She was born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939. Her father worked as an overseer at Poindexter Farm, and she recalled picking cotton with her family as a child. She grew up in a strict, religious household with her grandparents. After her mother left the family in 1950, Bullock eventually moved to St. Louis. She graduated from Sumner High School in 1958 and worked as a nurse's aide before her music career took off.

Beyond her musical achievements, Turner was a versatile entertainer. She appeared in feature films such as *Tommy*, *Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome*, and *Last Action Hero*. Her life story was so impactful that it inspired the biographical film *What's Love Got to Do with It* and the jukebox musical *Tina*.
