She is a pioneer in several musical genres. Her career spans rock, country, and gospel music. Many people call her "The Queen of Rockabilly." This title honors her early success in rockabilly. Rockabilly is a style that blends rock and roll with country music. Jackson was among the first women to find success in rock and roll. She also became one of the first female stars in country music.

Jackson's musical journey began with early training and local performances. She was born in Maud, Oklahoma, on October 20, 1937. Her father, Tom, taught her the guitar when she was six. She also took piano lessons to expand her skills.

In Oklahoma City, she sang in her local Baptist church. She later won a contest at the KLPR radio station. This victory gave her a 15-minute radio segment. She performed country songs on this show while still a teenager. This experience helped her learn how to host a radio program.

Professional discovery led to her first major recording opportunities. Country singer Hank Thompson heard her perform in 1952. He invited her to sing at the Trianon Ballroom. This performance led to regular work with Merl Lindsay's country band. Thompson eventually helped her secure a contract with Decca Records in 1954.

Her first hit was the country song "You Can't Have My Love." This single reached number eight on the Billboard Hot Country and Western Sides chart. In 1955, she made her first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry.

Jackson's career shifted significantly when she moved to Capitol Records in 1956. This move allowed her to record both country and rockabilly styles.

She released several rock singles during this era. These included "Fujiyama Mama," "Mean Mean Man," and "Let's Have a Party." Some critics described her rock performances as raucous or even raunchy. They noted her ability to mix traditional country with intense rockabilly. In 1958, she released her first self-titled debut album. This record featured both rock covers and country tracks.

Her music found massive success in international markets. The single "Fujiyama Mama" became a major hit in Japan.

She released several charting singles during this decade. These included "Right or Wrong" and "In the Middle of a Heartache." She even recorded songs for the German language market.

In 1971, Jackson experienced a personal shift toward Christianity. She made gospel music a primary focus of her professional career. She left Capitol Records in 1973 to join Word Records. This allowed her to focus on the gospel music circuit.
