She is widely recognized for her significant influence on contemporary Christian music (CCM). Grant eventually achieved success by crossing over into mainstream pop music. Because of her massive impact on these genres, she is often called "The Queen of Christian Pop." Her career spans several decades and includes many different musical styles. She has become one of the most successful artists to bridge the gap between religious and popular music.

Grant's professional journey began with a remarkable series of events during her teenage years. In 1976, she wrote her first song, "Mountain Top," and performed it at Harpeth Hall School.

She later recorded a demo tape with a church youth leader named Brown Bannister. While a copy was being made, studio owner Chris Christian heard the recording. He played the music over the phone to Word Records. Consequently, Grant was offered a recording contract just five weeks before her 16th birthday. She released her first self-titled album in early 1978, shortly before graduating high school.

Throughout her early career, Grant developed specific habits and professional relationships. She became known for performing barefoot during her concerts because she found it more comfortable.

In 1979, she met musician Gary Chapman at an album release party. The two toured together and were later married before divorcing in 1999. Grant also formed a long-lasting creative bond with songwriter Michael W. Smith. The two musicians often write songs for one another. They also frequently tour together during the November and December holiday seasons.

Grant's discography includes several landmark albums that changed the landscape of Christian music. The 1982 album *Age to Age* featured the signature track "El Shaddai." This song was later named one of the "Songs of the Century" by the RIAA in 2001. *Age to Age* was the first Christian album by a solo artist to be certified gold and platinum. In 1986, she achieved her first Billboard Hot 100 number one hit with the duet "The Next Time I Fall," featuring Peter Cetera.

Other major hits from this era included "That's What Love Is For," "Every Heartbeat," and "Good for Me." This period solidified her status as a major name in the global pop music industry.
