He is a rare artist who has achieved success on both contemporary Christian and mainstream music charts. Throughout his career, he has sold more than 18 million albums. His professional achievements include winning three Grammy Awards and 45 Dove Awards. In 1999, he received the ASCAP "Golden Note" Award for his lifetime achievement in songwriting. By 2014, ASCAP honored him as a "cornerstone of Christian music" because of his massive influence on the genre. Smith has recorded 31 number one hit songs and earned several gold and platinum albums.

Smith's journey began in Kenova, West Virginia. He was born to Paul and Barbara Smith. His father worked at an oil refinery, and his mother worked as a caterer. Smith developed a love for music through his church at a young age. He learned to play the piano and sang in the church choir. At age 10, he had an intense spiritual experience that led him to become a devout Christian.

After high school, Smith attended Marshall University. He studied songwriting but dropped out after one semester. He also played in various local bands around Huntington, West Virginia.

In 1978, Smith moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue music. He worked as a landscaper to support himself while playing in the local club scene. During this time, he struggled with substance abuse involving drugs and alcohol. Following a breakdown in November 1979, he decided to recommit to his Christian faith. The very next day, he auditioned for the contemporary Christian music (CCM) group Higher Ground. He was hired as a keyboardist. Performing on tour with Higher Ground helped him leave his past struggles behind.

His career expanded rapidly through songwriting and collaboration. In 1981, he signed as a writer to Meadowgreen Music. He wrote many gospel hits for artists such as Sandi Patty, Kathy Troccoli, Bill Gaither, and Amy Grant. In 1982, he began touring as a keyboardist for Amy Grant's "Age to Age" tour. He also became her opening act. In 1983, he released his first solo album, "The Michael W. Smith Project," on Reunion Records. This album featured the song "Friends," which he co-wrote with his wife, Deborah. By 1984, he was headlining his own musical tours.

Smith's music spans many different styles and formats. He moved into mainstream pop with his 1990 album "Go West Young Man." The single "Place in This World" reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. He also released several albums focused on worship and instrumental music. For example, his 2000 album "Freedom" was entirely instrumental. His 2001 album "Worship" was a live recording of worship music. In 2011, he released "Glory," an instrumental album featuring a 65-piece orchestra.

These included "Hymns," which featured traditional hymns, and "The Spirit of Christmas," a duet album. "The Spirit of Christmas" included collaborations with artists like Carrie Underwood and Bono. His 2014 album "Sovereign" became the highest-charting album of his career at that time.
