She is widely recognized for her ability to blend traditional bluegrass with various other musical styles. Her work has helped spark a renewed interest in bluegrass music across the United States. Krauss is also a key member of the group Union Station. She has released 14 albums throughout her career. Her musical talent has earned her some of the highest honors in the industry.

Krauss's musical foundation began with diverse influences at home. Her mother, an illustrator, played the banjo and acoustic guitar. This exposure introduced Alison to folk music during her childhood. She also listened to rock and pop music on the radio. She enjoyed artists like Electric Light Orchestra and Gary Numan. At age five, her mother encouraged her to study classical violin. Although she was sometimes reluctant to practice, she continued these lessons until age eleven.

Her transition into bluegrass music happened through careful listening and practice. In 1979, her mother provided her with a bluegrass fiddle instruction book. Krauss also studied the album *Duets* by violinist Richard Greene. She learned to play complex songs by ear. This ability to master difficult riffs by listening became a significant skill. In 1983, her parents purchased a custom violin made in Missouri. This was her first adult-sized instrument. By age 13, she won the Walnut Valley Festival Fiddle Championship.
