She was adopted as an infant and raised in Star, Mississippi. Her upbringing was in a devout Christian environment. She started singing at Star Baptist Church when she was only three years old. By age seven, she gave her first public performance at a 4-H luncheon. Later, she sang with a gospel quartet called the Steele Family. At age 17, she even formed a band to play at local rodeos.

Before finding fame, Hill worked several different jobs to support her dreams. At age 19, she moved to Nashville to pursue country music. She briefly attended Hinds Junior College before leaving to follow her career. In Nashville, she worked as a secretary at a music publishing firm. She also worked at a McDonald's restaurant, a job she noted she intensely disliked. Her big break came when a co-worker heard her singing. This led to her becoming a demo singer for her publishing company. Eventually, an executive from Warner Bros. Records heard her singing at the Bluebird Cafe and signed her to a contract.

Hill's early professional career focused on country music. Her debut album, *Take Me as I Am*, was released in 1993. It sold 3 million copies and included the hit song "Wild One." This song helped her become the first female country singer in 30 years to hold the number one position on the Billboard charts for four consecutive weeks. Her second album, *It Matters to Me*, arrived in 1995. This album also sold over 3 million copies. During this time, she had to undergo surgery to repair a ruptured blood vessel on her vocal cords.

In the late 1990s, Hill experienced a major career breakthrough through crossover success. Her 1998 album, *Faith*, moved toward a more mainstream pop sound. The single "This Kiss" became a hit on both country and pop charts. Following this, she released the album *Breathe* in 1999. This album was a massive global success, selling almost 10 million copies. It earned her three Grammy Awards, including Best Country Album. The title track, "Breathe," reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Throughout her career, Hill has received many prestigious honors. She has won five Grammy Awards and 15 Academy of Country Music Awards. She also holds six American Music Awards. In 2001, *Ladies Home Journal* named her one of the "30 Most Powerful Women in America." In 2009, Billboard named her the Adult Contemporary Artist of the Decade for the 2000s. She also performed the national anthem at Super Bowl XXXIV. Her influence extended to television, as she was the voice of the *NBC Sunday Night Football* intro from 2007 to 2012.

Family and collaboration are central parts of her life and work. Hill married singer Tim McGraw on October 6, 1996. They have three daughters: Gracie Katherine, Maggie Elizabeth, and Audrey Caroline. The couple often performs music together as a duet. Their song "It's Your Love" stayed at number one for six weeks. In 2006, they went on the Soul2Soul II Tour. This tour became the highest-grossing country tour of all time. Even as her music style changed, Hill remained dedicated to her roots and her fans.
