She is recognized as one of the most successful recording artists in United States history. Her career is defined by an extraordinary ability to master diverse musical genres. These include rock, folk, pop, country, soul, and even opera. Because of her massive influence and talent, she earned nicknames like the "First Lady of Rock" and the "Queen of Rock." She was a pioneer who opened many professional doors for women in the music industry.

Ronstadt's musical foundation was built on the eclectic sounds of her childhood in Tucson, Arizona. Growing up on a family ranch, she was immersed in many different traditions. Her family frequently sang Mexican music, which remained a staple of her musical identity. She also learned traditional pop and the Great American Songbook from her father. By age ten, she had already been exposed to a wide variety of styles via the radio.

She studied the intense rhythms of singers like Lola Beltrán and Édith Piaf. She also drew technical inspiration from opera legend Maria Callas to improve her rock and roll singing.

Her professional journey began in the mid-1960s within the California music scene. She initially joined a folk-rock trio known as the Stone Poneys. This group achieved significant success with the hit single "Different Drum," which reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. After this period, Ronstadt transitioned into a solo career that redefined the industry. Her 1969 album, Hand Sown ... Home Grown, is considered the first alternative country record by a female artist. She eventually became the first female "arena class" rock star, capable of filling massive concert venues.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Ronstadt maintained a constant presence on the music charts. She released several chart-topping albums, including Heart Like a Wheel, Simple Dreams, and Living in the USA. In the 1980s, she took unorthodox musical risks by collaborating with conductor Nelson Riddle. This move helped her remain one of the best-selling acts of that decade. Her discography includes 24 studio albums and 15 compilation albums.

The scale of her commercial success is immense. Ronstadt has sold more than 100 million records worldwide. Her singles have performed well both in the United States and internationally. In the UK, her duets "Somewhere Out There" and "Don't Know Much" reached numbers 8 and 2, respectively.

On the US Billboard Hot 100, she charted 38 singles. Of these, twenty-one reached the top 40, and ten reached the top 10. Her single "You're No Good" reached the number one position.

Ronstadt's talent has been recognized with numerous prestigious honors. She has won 11 Grammy Awards and several other major prizes, including an Emmy and an ALMA Award. In 2014, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

That same year, she received the National Medal of Arts and Humanities. In 2019, she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame alongside Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris. She was also one of five honorees to receive the 2019 Kennedy Center Honors.

In the later stages of her career, Ronstadt faced significant health challenges. After the year 2000, she noticed her singing voice was deteriorating. She released her final solo album in 2004 and her final live concert was in 2009. In 2011, she announced her retirement from music. She later revealed she could no longer sing due to progressive supranuclear palsy. This degenerative condition was initially misdiagnosed as Parkinson's disease. Despite this, she has remained active through public speaking tours and by sharing her story in her autobiography and a documentary.
