She is recognized as a leading figure in the country rock genre of the 1970s. She also helped define the Americana genre during the 1990s. Her music is known for uniting country and rock audiences through live performances. Critics and fellow artists frequently praise her unique voice and songwriting skill. Her career has spanned many decades and multiple musical styles.

Harris's musical path began with an early interest in folk music. Her grandfather gave her a guitar, which she learned to play. In high school, she was a saxophone player in a marching band. She was a dedicated student and served as her class valedictorian. She initially planned to become an actress and studied drama at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. After attending college, she moved to New York City to join the folk music scene. She worked as a waitress and a bookstore cashier to support herself.

In the early 1970s, Harris experienced a major turning point through her collaboration with Gram Parsons. Parsons was a singer-songwriter known for fusing country and rock music. He discovered Harris while she was performing in a Washington, D.C. nightclub. He invited her to Los Angeles to record harmony vocals for his debut album, *GP*. The two musicians shared an instant and strong musical connection. They toured together as members of his band, the Grievous Angels. Following Parsons's death in 1973, Harris decided to carry on his country rock legacy.

Harris achieved significant solo success starting in the mid-1970s. She worked with producer Brian Ahern, who helped shape her sound. Her 1975 album, *Pieces of the Sky*, was a major commercial and critical success. It featured the song "Boulder to Birmingham," which reflected her feelings about Parsons. Her next album, *Elite Hotel*, released in 1976, earned her a Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. This album also reached the top of the Billboard country charts. During this era, she formed a backing group known as the Hot Band.

Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, Harris maintained a steady stream of successful releases. By 1980, she had achieved four number-one songs on the U.S. and Canadian country charts. These hits included "Together Again," "Sweet Dreams," "Two More Bottles of Wine," and "Beneath Still Waters." Her albums during this time, such as *Roses in the Snow*, continued to find success. She also released the album *The Ballad of Sally Rose* in 1985, which was one of her first self-written projects. She later collaborated with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt in the successful group Trio.
