They are recognized as the best-selling all-woman band in history. The group currently consists of Natalie Maines, who provides lead vocals and guitar. She is joined by sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer. Maguire plays the fiddle, mandolin, and guitar. Strayer plays the banjo, guitar, and Dobro. Together, they have sold 33 million certified albums globally. This massive commercial success makes them a landmark group in the music industry.

The band creates a complex sound through diverse instrumentation. Martie Maguire is a multi-instrumentalist who uses the fiddle, mandolin, and viola. Emily Strayer contributes with the five-string banjo, Dobro, and resonator guitar. She also plays the accordion and the sitar. Natalie Maines adds a rock and blues influence to their music. She plays acoustic and electric guitar, as well as the electric bass. She also uses a Tacoma Papoose guitar during live performances. The members combine these instruments with vocal harmonies to create their unique style.

The group's history began in 1989 in Dallas, Texas.

The original lineup was known as the Dixie Chicks. It included sisters Martie and Emily Erwin, bassist Laura Lynch, and guitarist Robin Lynn Macy. For six years, they performed bluegrass music at festivals and small venues. In 1990, they received $10,000 from Penny Cook to record an album. This debut, titled Thank Heavens for Dale Evans, was released on an independent label. The band members often dressed as cowgirls during this early period.

Changes in the lineup led to major professional shifts. In 1992, Robin Lynn Macy left the group to pursue a purer bluegrass sound. Laura Lynch continued as the lead singer for a time. However, Lynch left the band in 1995 to spend more time with her daughter. This allowed the band to sign with Monument Records Nashville. Natalie Maines was selected as the new lead singer and second guitarist. This new trio moved away from their traditional cowgirl image toward a contemporary country sound. This shift helped them achieve much broader appeal.

Their commercial peak arrived with two massive album releases. Their 1998 debut, Wide Open Spaces, became a diamond certified hit. In the United States, it reached 13× platinum status. The follow-up album, Fly, was released in 1999 and also earned diamond certification. They are the only female band of any genre to have two back-to-back diamond albums.

The band has achieved number one hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts 22 times. Their successful singles include "Wide Open Spaces," "You Were Mine," and "Travelin' Soldier."

Throughout their career, the band has earned significant industry recognition. They have received 13 Grammy Awards for their musical achievements. They also hold ten Country Music Association awards and eight Academy of Country Music awards.

In 1998, the Country Music Association gave them the Horizon Award. This award honors artists who show significant creative growth and professionalism. Their ability to blend rootsy music with modern influences has earned them critical praise from many sources.

The band has also navigated difficult social and political moments. In 2003, the group criticized US President George W. Bush and the Iraq War. This public stance caused a significant backlash from the public. As a result, sales for their 2002 album, Home, were damaged. The group eventually entered a hiatus in 2008. During this time, Martie and Emily recorded music as a duo called Court Yard Hounds. They reunited for tours in 2016. In 2020, they officially changed their name from the Dixie Chicks to The Chicks. They chose this change because of the negative connotations of the word "Dixie."
