They are recognized as the most successful band in the history of country music. The group achieved this by blending traditional country music with Southern rock. They also incorporated elements of bluegrass, folk, and pop music into their sound. This unique combination gave them crossover appeal. This allowed them to reach many different types of listeners across various genres. Over their career, the band has sold more than 75 million records.

The band's foundation began with three cousins from Fort Payne, Alabama.

These members were Randy Owen, Teddy Gentry, and Jeff Cook. Owen and Gentry grew up on separate cotton farms near Lookout Mountain. They learned to sing in church and play guitar before they were six years old. In 1969, they formed a group called Young Country. They later performed under the name Wildcountry. The group worked hard to survive the early years of their career. They even shared a $56-a-month apartment in Anniston, Alabama. They performed six nights a week at a club called The Bowery in South Carolina. They often played cover songs by artists like Lynyrd Skynyrd to earn tips.

Transitioning to professional recording required significant effort and financial risk. The group borrowed $4,000 from a bank in Fort Payne to record their own albums. These albums were sold directly at their live shows. In 1977, GRT Records signed them to a one-record contract. The label wanted them to focus on songwriting. This led the group to change their name to The Alabama Band, which later became simply Alabama. A hidden clause in their contract initially prevented them from recording with other labels. The band spent two years raising money to buy out their contract. Eventually, they signed with MDJ Records. This move led to their first radio hit, "I Wanna Come Over."

Alabama reached superstardom after signing with RCA Records in April 1980.

Their first single for the label, "Tennessee River," produced by Harold Shedd, became a number one hit. This success started a massive streak of chart dominance. The band eventually achieved 27 country number one hits. They also released seven multi-platinum albums during their peak. Their music often featured high production values. They incorporated lighting and sets inspired by rock concerts into their live shows. This helped them stand out during their extensive tours.

The 1980s saw a rapid succession of major hits and awards.

In 1981, the album *Feels So Right* stayed on the Billboard 200 for over three years. The band released several massive singles during this era. Notable songs include "Love in the First Degree" from 1981 and "Mountain Music" from 1982. They also released "Dixieland Delight" in 1983 and "If You're Gonna Play in Texas (You Gotta Have a Fiddle in the Band)" in 1984. The album *Mountain Music* helped them win a Grammy Award for Best Country Performance. They also won the Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year award for three consecutive years from 1982 to 1984.

As time passed, the band's commercial dominance shifted. By the late 1980s, their album sales began to slow down. During the 1990s, their popularity waned slightly. However, they continued to produce hit singles and multi-platinum albums. The group officially disbanded in 2004 following a farewell tour and two albums of inspirational music. This period marked the end of their initial run of massive mainstream success. Despite the decline in chart dominance, their legacy remained strong among fans.

The band reunited in 2010 and continues to record and tour worldwide.
