The Eagles are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1971.

They are recognized as one of the most successful musical acts of the 1970s in North America. The group is among the world's best-selling music artists, with more than 200 million records sold worldwide. In the United States alone, they have sold 100 million records. Their massive success earned them six Grammy Awards and five American Music Awards. In 1998, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2010, Rolling Stones magazine ranked them number 75 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

The band's musical foundation relied on specific roles and collaborative songwriting. Founding members included Glenn Frey on guitar and vocals, Don Henley on drums and vocals, Bernie Leadon on guitar and vocals, and Randy Meisner on bass guitar and vocals.

A key element of their sound was high-flying harmony singing. This technique involves multiple vocalists blending their voices together. As the band evolved, songwriting became a central mechanism for their success. Don Henley and Glenn Frey formed a dominant songwriting partnership. They co-wrote many of the band's most famous tracks, which helped shape the group's musical direction.

The group experienced several distinct stages and membership changes. Initially, the band focused on a country-rock style. This changed when guitarist Don Felder joined in 1974. Felder, nicknamed "Fingers" due to his skill, helped the band move toward a harder rock sound.

In 1975, Bernie Leadon left the group and was replaced by guitarist and vocalist Joe Walsh. Later, in 1977, Timothy B. Schmit replaced Randy Meisner on bass. These shifts in personnel altered the band's texture and musical complexity over the decades.

The history of the Eagles began through the mentorship of singer Linda Ronstadt. In early 1971, Ronstadt and her manager, John Boylan, recruited Frey and Henley for her band.

Leadon and Meisner also joined Ronstadt's group for a summer tour. During this time, Frey and Henley decided to form their own band. They signed with Asylum Records, a new label started by David Geffen. The group even traveled to Aspen, Colorado, to develop their identity. They eventually chose the name "Eagles" during a trip to the Mojave Desert.

The band's commercial significance is marked by massive sales figures. Their 1976 album, Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975), is the best-selling album in the United States, with 40 million copies sold. Their 1976 studio album, Hotel California, was also a global phenomenon. It sold more than 28 million copies in the US and over 32 million copies worldwide. This album produced the hit "Hotel California," which was their only top-10 hit in the United Kingdom. It also reached number two in France and hit the top ten in New Zealand.

Notable examples of their work demonstrate their range across different genres. Their debut album, Eagles (1972), featured the hit "Take It Easy," which was co-written by Frey and Jackson Browne.

The album One of These Nights (1975) made them international superstars and featured the Grammy-winning song "Lyin' Eyes." Another significant track, "Take It to the Limit," was unique because it featured Meisner on lead vocals. Even their instrumental music had an impact, as Bernie Leadon's "Journey of the Sorcerer" was used as theme music for the BBC's versions of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

The Eagles' legacy connects to the broader history of rock music and touring. After breaking up in 1980, they reunited in 1994 for the album Hell Freezes Over. They have since maintained a presence through large-scale tours, such as the History of the Eagles Tour in 2013.

Following the death of Glenn Frey in 2016, the band re-formed in 2017. His son, Deacon Frey, joined the group to share lead vocals on his father's songs. The band continues to perform, including their ongoing final tour.
