Making their music involves many different instruments and skills. The members play a wide variety of stringed instruments. Martie often plays the fiddle or the mandolin. Emily uses the five-stringed banjo and the resonator guitar. Natalie plays the acoustic and electric guitar. Sometimes the band uses even more unique tools like the sitar or the accordion. They also sing together to create their special sound. This mix of instruments helps them move between different styles of music.

The band started in Dallas, Texas, in 1989.

At first, they were called the Dixie Chicks. The original group included sisters Martie and Emily Erwin. They also played with Laura Lynch and Robin Lynn Macy. For six years, they played bluegrass at small festivals and venues. In 1992, Macy left the group. Later, in 1995, Natalie Maines joined the band. This new lineup helped them find much more success.

Their career has been full of big moments and numbers.

Their first major album was called Wide Open Spaces. It was released in 1998 and became diamond certified. Their next album, Fly, came out in 1999. It also became a diamond certified hit. The band has reached number one on the charts 22 times. They have won 13 Grammy Awards for their great work. They also won many awards from the Country Music Association.

Music connects the band to many different people and eras. In 2003, the group faced a hard time after speaking about the US president. This caused people to stop buying their album called Home. The band took a break in 2008, but they reunited in 2016. In 2020, they changed their name to just The Chicks. They did this because they wanted to move away from the word "Dixie." They released a new album called Gaslighter that same year.
