Her career spanned over five decades, leaving an indelible mark on American music and culture.

Franklin's musical foundation was built through gospel music and piano. She learned to play the piano by ear, meaning she played by listening rather than reading notation. As a child, she performed solos at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan.

Her father, C. L. Franklin, was a prominent Baptist minister known for his "million-dollar voice." He began managing her career when she was twelve years old. He took her on "gospel caravan" tours to perform in various churches across the country.

Her professional journey moved through several distinct stages and record labels. At age 18, she moved to New York to pursue pop music. She signed with Columbia Records in 1960 as a "five-percent artist." During this era, she performed many genres, including vocal jazz, blues, and doo-wop. While she found some success, she struggled to achieve major commercial heights at Columbia.

Many experts believe the label failed to fully utilize her gospel roots.

A major turning point occurred in 1966 when she signed with Atlantic Records. Producer Jerry Wexler encouraged her to embrace a tenacious form of rhythm and blues. This style became widely identified as soul music.
