He spent 18 seasons as a left-handed starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Throughout his career, he achieved many elite milestones. He was an 11-time National League (NL) All-Star. He also won the Cy Young Award three times. In 2014, he was named the NL Most Valuable Player. He is one of only 20 pitchers in history to join the 3,000 strikeout club.

Pitching at a high level requires incredible skill and control. Kershaw used various pitches to deceive batters. During spring training, he famously threw a curveball to Sean Casey. The ball started behind the batter before looping into the strike zone. This movement caused the batter to strike out looking. Later in his career, improving his slider became a major turning point for his performance. These specialized movements allowed him to dominate hitters consistently.

Kershaw's career was marked by several distinct stages of dominance. He began in the Dodgers' farm system, playing for teams like the Great Lakes Loons. He then moved to the Double-A Jacksonville Suns. In 2008, he reached the major leagues. His 2011 season was particularly historic. That year, he won the pitching Triple Crown. This means he led his league in wins, strikeouts, and earned run average (ERA).

His journey started in Dallas, Texas, where he was born on March 19, 1988. He attended Highland Park High School and played both baseball and football. In 2006, he was the Gatorade National Player of the Year. The Los Angeles Dodgers selected him with the seventh overall pick in the 2006 MLB draft. He chose to sign with the Dodgers over a scholarship to Texas A&M University. His signing bonus was estimated at $2.3 million.

Kershaw's statistical achievements are quite remarkable. He was the first pitcher to lead the MLB in ERA for four consecutive years from 2011 to 2014. He also led the NL in ERA for a fifth time. His career ERA of 2.53 is the lowest among starters in the live-ball era with at least 60 starts. In 2011, he was the first 23-year-old pitcher to reach 32 victories with a 3.15 ERA and over one strikeout per inning. On June 18, 2014, he achieved the rare feat of pitching a no-hitter.

Despite his regular-season success, his performance changed during the postseason. His postseason ERA was 4.62, which was higher than his regular-season average. He was a member of the 2025 World Series-winning team, though he missed the postseason due to injuries. He officially retired from Major League Baseball after the 2025 season. His career represents a massive era of Dodgers baseball history.

Beyond the baseball diamond, Kershaw is known for significant humanitarian work. He and his wife, Ellen, launched an organization called "Kershaw's Challenge." They also wrote a book titled *Arise: Live Out Your Faith and Dreams on Whatever Field You Find Yourself*. This work helps raise money to build an orphanage in Zambia. Because of these efforts, he received the Roberto Clemente Award and the Branch Rickey Award.
