The team's history began in 1883 in Brooklyn, New York. It was founded as the Brooklyn Baseball Association. The club joined the National League in 1890 as the Brooklyn Bridegrooms. Over time, the team used several different nicknames. They were called the Superbas and the Robins. In the early 1900s, sportswriters used the nickname Trolley Dodgers. This name came from pedestrians dodging streetcars in Brooklyn. In 1932, writers officially chose the name Dodgers.

A major turning point occurred in 1947. Jackie Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers that year. He was the first African American to play in the Major Leagues since 1884. This happened because of efforts by general manager Branch Rickey. Robinson was a fast and intense runner. He became the first recipient of the Rookie of the Year award. Today, that award is named the Jackie Robinson Award. His debut helped start the integration of professional sports. This was a key moment in the American Civil Rights Movement.

The team eventually moved from New York to California. Owner Walter O'Malley wanted a new stadium in Brooklyn. However, city officials refused to help him build it. Because of this, O'Malley moved the franchise to Los Angeles before the 1958 season. The team played four seasons at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. In 1962, they moved to their current home, Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers have seen many legendary players. In the 1960s, pitchers Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale led the team to titles. Don Newcombe was the first player to win the Cy Young Award and NL MVP in one season. In 1981, pitcher Fernando Valenzuela became a sensation. This era was known as "Fernandomania." Valenzuela is the only player to win the Cy Young and Rookie of the Year awards in the same season.

The franchise holds several impressive records. Eight Dodgers pitchers have won 12 Cy Young Awards. This is the most of any MLB franchise. The team also has 18 Rookie of the Year winners. This is twice as many as the next club. The Dodgers have appeared in the World Series 22 times. Since moving to Los Angeles, they have won eight World Series titles. They have won more titles in California than they did in Brooklyn.

Competition and rivalry are central to the Dodgers' identity. They have a long rivalry with the New York Yankees. The two clubs have met in the World Series 12 times. The Dodgers also share a rivalry with the San Francisco Giants. This rivalry has lasted over a century. It began when both teams were in New York City. It continued after both teams moved west for the 1958 season. The Dodgers have won eight World Series titles in this era. The Giants have won three.
