He played a vital role in developing rock and roll and rockabilly music. Many critics called him "rock 'n' roll's first great wild man." He was also nicknamed "The Killer" because of his intense energy. His musical style was defined by a powerful, driving piano sound. This style helped shape the foundation of modern popular music.

Lewis used a very physical method to play the piano. He did not just use his fingers to hit the notes. He would pound the keys with his heel to create rhythm. He often kicked his piano bench aside during a performance. He would play while standing up or even sitting directly on the keyboard. He also raked his hands rapidly up and down the keys.

These energetic moves made his live shows famous and highly unpredictable.

His career moved through several distinct musical stages. He began with early recordings in New Orleans in 1952. In 1956, he moved to Memphis to record for Sun Records. This period produced his biggest rock and roll hits. Later, in the 1960s, he transitioned into country music. This shift allowed him to find new success on different charts. He eventually embraced his rock past while remaining a country star.

Lewis grew up in an impoverished farming family in Ferriday, Louisiana.

His parents mortgaged their farm to purchase a piano for him. He learned to play alongside his cousins, Mickey Gilley and Jimmy Swaggart. His early musical influences included the radio and local juke joints. In 1949, he gave his first public performance at a car dealership. He was even expelled from the Southwest Bible Institute for playing "worldly" music at a church assembly.

His time at Sun Records was a major turning point.

He recorded many famous singles there as a solo artist. He also worked as a session musician for artists like Carl Perkins. One famous moment occurred in December 1956 during an impromptu jam session. This session included Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. These recordings were later released as the Million Dollar Quartet.

Lewis achieved massive commercial success with specific hit songs. His 1957 hit "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" brought him worldwide fame. "Great Balls of Fire" was another massive success. In the country music era, he had 30 songs reach the top 10 on the Billboard Country and Western Chart. His 2006 album, Last Man Standing, sold over one million copies worldwide. He also earned a dozen gold records throughout his career.

His personal life faced a major scandal in 1958. This occurred when news spread that he had married his 13-year-old cousin, Myra Gale Brown.

This event caused an uproar and led to the cancellation of a British tour. His rock and roll popularity declined for a time following this controversy. However, his move to country music in 1968 helped reignite his career. He remained a touring artist well into the 21st century.

Lewis received many honors for his contributions to music. He won four Grammy awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award. He was inducted into the inaugural class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. He was also part of the first group inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame. In 2022, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. His life was even depicted in the 1989 film Great Balls of Fire.
