He is best known for helping to create the rockabilly musical style. Rockabilly is a genre that combines elements of country, rhythm and blues, and gospel music. Vincent earned the nickname "The Screaming End" due to his energetic performance style. He often performed with his backing band, known as the Blue Caps.

This name was a reference to enlisted sailors in the United States Navy. Today, his musical legacy is honored through inductions into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.

Vincent's musical foundation was built on several diverse influences. He grew up in Virginia, where his family operated a country store. His musical interests included classical works like Beethoven's Egmont overture. He received his first guitar as a gift when he was twelve years old. Before his music career began, Vincent served in the United States Navy. He joined the fleet at age 17 and served as a crewman aboard the ship Chukawan. During his service, he completed a deployment in Korean waters during the Korean War.

Life changed significantly for Vincent due to a serious accident in 1955. While in Norfolk, Virginia, he was involved in an automobile crash. Most accounts suggest a drunk driver struck him during the incident. The accident shattered his left leg. Although doctors saved the leg, it left him with permanent pain and a limp. For the rest of his life, he wore a steel sheath as a leg brace. This physical challenge did not stop him from performing on stage.

His professional breakthrough arrived in 1956 with the song "Be-Bop-a-Lula."

A local radio DJ named "Sheriff Tex" Davis helped arrange a demo of the song. This demo secured Vincent a contract with Capitol Records. The song became a massive commercial success and a significant early example of rockabilly. It reached number 7 on the Billboard pop chart and stayed there for 20 weeks. It also peaked at number 5 on the Cash Box chart for 17 weeks. Vincent eventually received a gold record for selling two million copies of this single.

Vincent's career saw different levels of success in different countries. In the United States, he achieved three top 40 hits between 1956 and 1957. However, he struggled to reach the top 100 charts again in his home country. In contrast, he became a major star in the United Kingdom. Between 1956 and 1961, he achieved eight top 40 hits in the UK. He even toured Australia in 1957 with artists Little Richard and Eddie Cochran. During that tour, they played to audiences totaling 72,000 people at the Sydney Stadium.

In 1960, Vincent experienced another major life event while touring the United Kingdom. He was involved in a high-speed traffic accident in a taxi in Chippenham, Wiltshire. The crash involved musician Eddie Cochran and songwriter Sharon Sheeley. Vincent suffered broken ribs and a broken collarbone. The accident also worsened his existing leg injury. Tragically, Eddie Cochran died the following day from his injuries. This event marked a difficult period in Vincent's life and career.

Later in his life, Vincent moved to Britain and continued to record music. He worked with various bands, including the Blue Caps and the Shouts. In 1969, he recorded the album "I'm Back and I'm Proud" for Dandelion Records. This album featured backing vocals from Linda Ronstadt. Despite his attempts to find success in folk rock and country rock, he is most remembered for his 1950s recordings. His work remains a vital part of the history of early rock and roll music.
