Producer Sam Phillips wanted to bring African-American music to wider audiences. In July 1954, Presley recorded a version of "That's All Right." This song was originally a blues number by Arthur Crudup. During the session, Presley and his bandmates used an energetic, improvisational approach. Phillips used a technique called "slapback" to create a specific echo effect. This distinctive sound helped define the early rock and roll era.
