Her career spans several decades and multiple languages, including Indonesian, English, and French. She is recognized as one of the best-selling Asian artists outside of Asia. Anggun holds the distinction of being the first Indonesian artist to achieve success on European and American record charts. Her massive popularity and cultural impact led to her becoming the first Indonesian woman to be immortalized in wax by Madame Tussauds. Beyond music, she has used her platform to serve as a global ambassador for the United Nations.

Her musical foundation was built through rigorous training in Jakarta, Indonesia. Born on April 29, 1974, her full name translates to "grace born of a dream."

At age seven, she began receiving strict daily vocal instructions. Her father, a Javanese writer, guided her using a vocal practice book by coach Pranadjaja. He also assigned her homework to write poems paired with melodies to develop her songwriting skills. By age nine, she began writing her own songs and recorded her debut album. This early training allowed her to release five Indonesian-language studio albums by 1993, selling over four million albums in her home country by age nineteen.

Anggun's career progressed through distinct stages of local fame and international exploration. In the late 1980s, she emerged as a teenage rock star. Her single "Mimpi" was later ranked by Rolling Stone Indonesia as one of the 150 Greatest Indonesian Songs of All Time. Seeking a broader audience, she sold her record company, Bali Cipta Records, to fund a move to Europe in 1994.

After facing culture shock and financial struggles in England, she moved to France. There, she studied French at Alliance Française for three months and found a mentor in French singer Florent Pagny. This transition marked her shift from a regional rock singer to an international artist blending world music with adult contemporary sounds.

Her international breakthrough arrived with the release of her debut French-language album, *Au nom de la lune*, in 1997.
