The name Sjón is an abbreviation of his birth name, Sigurjón Birgir Sigurðsson. It also means "sight" in Icelandic. His creative influence reaches far beyond his home island. His literary works have been translated into 30 different languages. He is known for blending different types of storytelling into unique art forms.

Sjón’s creative process often involves deep collaboration with other artists. He frequently works with the famous singer Björk. They met as teenagers and formed a two-person band called Rocka Rocka Drum. Later, Sjón wrote lyrics for her solo music. One major success was the song "I've Seen it All" for the film *Dancer in the Dark*. This collaboration earned nominations for "Best Original Song" at the 2001 Golden Globes and the 2001 Academy Awards.

He also co-wrote the song "Oceania" for the 2004 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony in Athens, Greece.

His writing style is defined by surrealism. Surrealism involves using unexpected transformations and strange events in a story. He often explores the blurring of boundaries between humans and animals. Sjón describes his love for metamorphosis, which is the process of changing from one form to another. He finds this to be a powerful tool in literature. This style creates a sense of wonder and strangeness for his readers.

Iceland’s natural environment plays a major role in his work. The island is a remote, volcanic land with frequent tectonic activity. Sjón says that Icelanders are at the mercy of volcanoes, earthquakes, and the sea. He views the sea as something that can be a friend or a monster. This relationship with a powerful, changing landscape helps shape his literary themes. The physical world of Iceland provides a backdrop for his surreal ideas.

Sjón’s career began very early in his life. He published his first book of poetry, *Sýnir* (Visions), in 1978 when he was only 16. During his youth, he followed cultural scenes in London and New York. He was interested in the emergence of punk subculture. He also became a founding member of the neo-surrealist group Medúsa. In the 1980s, he was a significant part of the Reykjavik cultural scene. He even performed as "Johnny Triumph" with the band The Sugarcubes.

His film work has also gained international recognition. He co-wrote the film *Lamb* with Valdimar Jóhannsson, which premiered in 2021. This film was selected as Iceland's entry for the 2022 Academy Awards. It received attention at many festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival. Sjón also co-wrote the historical epic *The Northman* in 2022. This film was directed by Robert Eggers and is based on the legend of the Viking prince Amleth. He also worked on the animated film *Anna and the Moods*.

Personal history and social views also influence his writing. Sjón’s grandfather was a Nazi spy who was arrested for treason in 1944. This family history is explored in his 2019 novel, *Red Milk*. Sjón also uses his platform to speak about Icelandic culture. He argues that Icelandic culture is a hybrid of many different influences. He advocates for including works written in languages like Polish, Spanish, and English. He believes that modern Icelandic literature should reflect these growing immigrant communities.
