The group has three main members. Beth Gibbons provides the singing and production. Geoff Barrow plays many instruments like the piano and drums. He also works on the production. Adrian Utley plays the guitar and the bass. Sometimes, an engineer named Dave McDonald helps them too. People love their music because it feels very special. It often sounds like a soundtrack for a movie.

Making their music is a very interesting way of working. Geoff Barrow used to borrow records from a local DJ named Andy Smith. He took small parts of these songs to use in his own music. This is a way of making music called sampling. He would use these sounds as loops for hip-hop beats. Later, the band used more live instruments instead of just samples. Their third album, Third, sounded even rockier with more drums.

This mix of sounds makes them unique.

The band started back in February 1991. Beth Gibbons and Geoff Barrow met during a coffee break. They were both taking a course in Bristol. They named the band after their home town, Portishead. Soon, they met Adrian Utley while recording at Coach House Studios. They began to share musical ideas together.

This helped them create their first big songs. They worked hard to build their own sound from the start.

Their first album was called Dummy and came out in 1994. It was a huge success in Europe and the United States. In America, it sold more than 150,000 copies before they even toured there. The album won the Mercury Music Prize in 1995. It also had three famous singles: "Numb," "Sour Times," and "Glory Box." Their second album, Portishead, came out in 1997. Their third album, Third, was released on April 28, 2008. These albums helped define a style of music called trip-hop.

Many different kinds of music helped the band grow. They were inspired by hip-hop producers from New York. They also liked the music from old sci-fi TV shows. Some people say Beth Gibbons sings like the famous singer Billie Holiday. They even played at huge events like the Glastonbury Music festival. In 2016, they won an award for their work in British music. Even though they do different things now, they have never broken up. They continue to make music in their own way.
