Their name means "Victory Rose." The band formed in Reykjavík in January 1994. The original members were Jónsi, Georg Hólm, and Ágúst Ævar Gunnarsson. They later added Kjartan Sveinsson on keyboards in 1998. Jónsi's sister is named Sigurrós. The band took her name for their own. This group is known for a magical and soft sound. People love their music because it feels very special and dreamlike.

There are many ways the band makes their unique sound. Jónsi sings using a high, soft voice called falsetto. He also plays the guitar in a very unusual way. He uses a bow, like the kind used for a cello, on the guitar strings.

This creates a smooth and flowing sound. The band also uses a special way of singing. They use a language called Vonlenska, or Hopelandic. This language has no set meaning for words. It sounds like the Icelandic language is being spoken. This allows listeners to imagine their own meanings for the songs.

Sigur Rós has a long history of making music. They released their first album, Von, in 1997. Their second album, Ágætis byrjun, made them famous all over the world in 1999. This album helped them get praise from famous artists like David Bowie and Coldplay.

In 2001, they recorded an EP called Rímur. This project included an Icelandic fisherman named Steindór Andersen. He recited traditional Icelandic rímur poetry for them. The band even sold a small number of these records in white paper cases. They have released eight studio albums in total.

Many different places and events have used their music. Their songs appear in many movies and television shows. For example, the song "Svefn-g-englar" was in the show CSI. The song "Hoppípolla" was used in trailers for the series Planet Earth.

This song was also used in the movie We Bought a Zoo. The band has toured many countries. They have played in Canada, Japan, Australia, and the United States. They even played a show at the Hollywood Bowl. They have performed in many large cities around the world.

Their music is deeply connected to their home in Iceland. In 2007, they released a film called Heima. This word means "at home." The film shows the band playing live during a tour in Iceland.

It shows how the nature of Iceland helps shape their music. The band members talk about what Iceland means to them. They even played surprise concerts in places like abandoned bunkers. Their music connects the beauty of the land to the sounds they make. This makes their art feel very personal and real.
