Huun-Huur-Tu is a famous music group from Tuva. Tuva is a place in a Russian republic near the Mongolia border.

Their music is special because it uses a style called throat singing. This is also known as khöömei. In this style, singers can produce two or three notes at the same time. One note is the main sound. The other note is an overtone. This overtone can sound like a flute or a whistle. It can even sound like a bird. All of these sounds come only from the human voice.

The group uses many native instruments from Tuva. They play the igil, which is a stringed instrument. They also play the khomus, which is a Tuvan jaw harp. Other instruments include the doshpuluur and the dünggür. The dünggür is a shaman drum.

Recently, the group has also used Western instruments. They sometimes play the guitar. They like to mix traditional Tuvan folk music with new sounds. They even use electronic music in their work. This helps them create a unique blend of old and new.

The group began in 1992. At first, they were called the khöömei quartet Kunggurtug. The founding members were Kaigal-ool Khovalyg, Alexander Bapa, Sayan Bapa, and Albert Kuvezin. Soon after, they changed their name to Huun-Huur-Tu. This name means "sunbeams" or "sun propeller."

Their early songs often focused on the Tuvan steppe. They also sang about horses. Their first album was called 60 Horses In My Herd. It was released in 1993. They recorded it in London and Mill Valley, California.

Many people have joined the group over the years. Albert Kuvezin left to start a rock group called Yat-Kha. He was replaced by Anatoli Kuular. In 1995, Alexander Bapa left to work in music production. Alexei Saryglar joined the group next. They recorded an album in the Netherlands in 1997. Later, Andrey Mongush joined in 2003. He was a teacher of khöömei and Tuvan instruments. In 2005, Radik Tülüsh joined the ensemble.

The group has released many albums, including Where Young Grass Grows in 1999.

Huun-Huur-Tu has worked with many different kinds of musicians. They have collaborated with the Kronos Quartet and the Kodo drummers. They even worked with the famous musician Frank Zappa. They have played with blues groups like Hazmat Modine. Their music has also been used in movies and TV shows. For example, their songs were in the film Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner. Their music was also heard on the show Fargo. This shows how their traditional sounds can reach people all over the world.
