Aquarium is a famous Russian rock band that changed music history.

It began in Leningrad in 1972. Two friends started the group together. One was Boris Grebenshchikov, a student of math. The other was Anatoly Gunitsky, a poet. Boris is the only original member still in the band today. They are known as founders of Russian rock music. This group helped create a new sound for many people.

In the early days, playing rock was a hard job. The Soviet Union had very strict rules for music.

Because of these rules, the band often played in private homes. These were called apartment concerts, or "kvartirniki" in Russian. The music had to stay quiet so neighbors would not call the police. This made the shows feel very close and special. Fans listened with bated breath in these small spaces.

The band used many different instruments to make their sound. They played guitars, drums, and keyboards.

One member, Andrew Romanov, even learned to play the flute. For a short time, they also mixed music with theater. They performed plays on the steps of the Engineers' Castle. This combined rock songs with poetry and acting. They eventually moved back to focusing mostly on music.

In 1980, the band became a symbol of a new culture. They played at the Tbilisi Rock Festival that year.

Their performance was seen as very shocking and bizarre. This caused a big scandal with the festival leaders. Grebenshchikov even lost his job because of the event. However, this made the band very famous in Leningrad. They became a symbol for people who wanted different art.

Later, the band found huge mainstream success. In the late 1980s, they could play in large halls.

One of their albums sold over one million copies! They even recorded music for famous films like Assa. Today, Aquarium still tours all over the world. They have played in famous places like the Royal Albert Hall in London. The band continues to release new albums for their fans.
