Aquarium is a famous Russian rock band.

It started in Leningrad in 1972. Two friends formed the group. One was Boris Grebenshchikov. The other was Anatoly Gunitsky. Boris is the only original member left today.

In the past, rock music was hard to play in the Soviet Union. The government kept strict rules. Because of this, the band played in private homes. These were called apartment concerts. These shows were quiet so neighbors would not call the police. They felt very close and special for the fans.

The band used many sounds. They played guitars, drums, and keyboards. One member even played the flute. They were also part of amateur theater for a time. This mixed rock music with poetry and plays.

At a big festival in 1980, the band caused a stir. Their show was seen as shocking. This made them a symbol for a new kind of culture. Later, things changed. In the 1980s, they became very popular. One of their albums sold over a million copies! Today, the band still tours the world. They have even played at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
