They are known for a loud and energetic sound. Liam Howlett calls this style "electronic punk." The group helped lead new types of dance music. These styles include breakbeat, breaks, and big beat. People often call them the "Godfathers of Rave." They made music that people could dance to in large groups. This music brought a sense of excitement to the underground rave scene.

Making their music involves using many different electronic tools. Liam Howlett uses things like the Roland U-220 sound module. He also uses a TR-909 drum machine to create strong beats. In the early days, he used a Roland W-30 sampling keyboard. Sampling means taking sounds from other places and putting them in songs. For example, their hit "Charly" used sounds from animated films. This helped them create a unique and catchy sound. They used these tools to move from simple rave music to more complex styles.

The band began in Braintree, Essex, in 1990.

Liam Howlett was 18 years old when he started the group. He met dancers Keith Flint and Leeroy Thornhill at a club called The Barn. They decided to work together after hearing a mix tape. The group officially formed on October 5, 1990. They played their first live show in February 1991. That first show was at The Four Aces Club in London. It was a very rough venue at that time.

The Prodigy became very successful during the 1990s.

Their album "The Fat of the Land" reached number one in 16 different countries. This included the UK and the US. In 1996, they released the famous song "Firestarter." This was their first song with a lead singer. Keith Flint became the frontman and had a very famous punk look. The song was very popular but also caused some controversy in the news. Their music helped them sell an estimated 25 million records worldwide.

Many people recognize The Prodigy from their big awards and hits.

They have won two Brit Awards for Best British Dance Act. They also won several MTV awards. They even received two Grammy Award nominations. While the group changed over the years, Liam Howlett and Maxim remain. Keith Flint passed away in 2019. The band's history shows how electronic music moved from small clubs to huge stadiums. Their music continues to be a major part of dance history.
