They are known for making many different kinds of music. The band started as part of a style called progressive rock. This music often has long and complex songs. Later, they moved toward a pop-oriented sound. This change helped them find even more success with listeners. They have sold between 100 million and 150 million albums worldwide. This makes them one of the best-selling music artists ever.

Their music has inspired many tribute bands to recreate their shows.

Making music for Genesis involved many different roles. Some members played the keyboard, like Tony Banks. Others played the bass or guitar, like Mike Rutherford. Phil Collins played the drums and also sang. In the early days, the band worked very hard. They once lived in a cottage in Surrey to practice. They would play music together for eleven hours every day.

The band began at Charterhouse School in Godalming, Surrey.

The founding members met there in the mid-1960s. They included Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Peter Gabriel, Anthony Phillips, and Chris Stewart. A man named Jonathan King gave them the name Genesis. In 1969, they released their first album, From Genesis to Revelation. At that time, the members were only between 15 and 17 years old. They later signed with Charisma Records to continue their journey.

Genesis went through many changes in their group members.

After Gabriel left, Phil Collins took over as the lead singer. The group then became a three-piece with Banks, Rutherford, and Collins. They released many successful albums like Duke and Invisible Touch. Even when members changed, the music kept reaching many people.

Many things connect Genesis to the history of music. They won a Grammy Award for their music video "Land of Confusion."
