The group was known for a very unique style of music. They mixed punk, art rock, and funk with world music. This made them one of the most acclaimed groups of the 1980s. Their image was often described as anxious yet clean-cut. People still study their music because it was so creative. They helped start a new kind of sound called new wave.

To make their complex music, they sometimes added more players. They worked with musicians like Adrian Belew and Bernie Worrell. They also worked with a producer named Brian Eno. Eno helped them explore many different musical directions. This collaboration led to some of their most famous albums.

The band started with students at a design school. David Byrne and Chris Frantz met in 1973. They first formed a band called the Artistics. Tina Weymouth was also a student at the same school. The three moved to New York City in 1975. They chose the name Talking Heads from a TV Guide term. This term described a camera shot of a person talking. They played their first big show at a club called CBGB.
