They are recognized for their evolution through different musical eras. The group began as pioneers of progressive rock. This style often features long, complex compositions. Later, the band transitioned toward a more pop-oriented sound. This shift brought them massive commercial success. They are among the world's best-selling music artists. Their total album sales range between 100 million and 150 million worldwide.

Creating the Genesis sound required intense dedication and varied skills. In their early years, the members practiced with extreme focus. They lived in a Surrey cottage to rehearse. They often played music together for eleven hours each day. The band utilized several distinct musical roles. Tony Banks provided complex textures on the keyboards. Mike Rutherford played the bass and the guitar.

Phil Collins served as both a drummer and a singer. This combination of talent allowed for intricate arrangements.

The band's history is defined by several distinct lineups. The founding members met at Charterhouse School in Surrey. This group included Banks, Rutherford, Peter Gabriel, Anthony Phillips, and Chris Stewart. They released their first album, From Genesis to Revelation, in 1969. During the 1970s, the group included guitarist Steve Hackett.

This era was marked by theatricality. Peter Gabriel often wore elaborate costumes during live performances. One notable costume featured a cape with bat wings.

Following Gabriel's departure, the band underwent a major structural change. Phil Collins became the lead singer. The group then operated as a four-piece. Eventually, Hackett left in 1977. This reduced Genesis to a three-piece lineup. This core consisted of Banks, Rutherford, and Collins. They released several successful albums during this period. These included Duke, Abacab, and the hit Invisible Touch.

The band's origins trace back to the mid-1960s at Charterhouse School. The members were quite young when they started. Many were between the ages of 15 and 17. A pop producer named Jonathan King provided their name. He also helped them record their debut album in 1969. The album faced early challenges in the market. Many record shops mistakenly filed it under religious music. This led to very low initial sales. Banks noted the album sold only 649 copies after a year.

Genesis achieved significant milestones throughout their long career. They released fifteen studio albums and six live albums. Their success included reaching number three in the UK with Selling England by the Pound. They also achieved major hits like "Follow You Follow Me." The group earned a Grammy Award for their music video "Land of Confusion."

Their impact is seen in many tribute bands. These groups recreate various stages of the Genesis live experience. The band members even reunited for major tours in 2007 and 2021.

The legacy of Genesis connects to the broader history of popular music. In 2010, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This honor recognizes their lasting contribution to the industry. Their ability to adapt to different genres is a key part of their story. They moved from complex progressive rock to global pop success. This journey shows how musical styles can shift over decades. Their discography remains a significant part of rock history.
