They formed in London in 1977 with four original members. Mark Knopfler sang and played lead guitar. David Knopfler played rhythm guitar. John Illsley played the bass guitar. Pick Withers played the drums. The band had a special sound that was different from punk rock. They used music from country, folk, jazz, and blues rock. This style made them very popular around the world.

Making their music involved many steps and hard work. At first, they were called the Café Racers. They recorded a demo tape with five songs. One of those songs was "Sultans of Swing." They sent a tape to a radio DJ named Charlie Gillett. He liked the music so much that he played it on his show. This helped them sign a contract with Vertigo Records. They recorded their first album in London in February 1978. It cost them £12,500 to make that first record.

The band grew and changed as time went on. In 1980, they released an album called Making Movies. During this time, David Knopfler left the group to work alone. New members like Alan Clark and Hal Lindes joined the band. They made many more famous songs like "Romeo and Juliet." In 1982, they released Love Over Gold. This album was the first one produced only by Mark Knopfler. It included a very long song called "Telegraph Road."

It was also the first album to sell one million copies on CD. The band won four Grammy Awards and three Brit Awards. They even played at the famous Live Aid show in 1985. Their final world tour in the early 1990s sold 7.1 million tickets.

Even today, people remember their music very clearly. The band sold between 100 million and 120 million records in total. This makes them one of the best-selling artists ever. In 2018, they were put into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band stopped playing together in 1995. Mark Knopfler started a solo career after that. He has said he will not play with the group again.
