He was a singer and a songwriter too. His music covered many different styles like R&B, rock, soul, funk, and gospel. People loved his talent because he could play so many different sounds. He was a very important person in the music world. He even earned a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. This is a huge honor for great artists.

Preston learned how to play music all by himself. He was a child prodigy, which means he was very gifted at a young age. He never had a formal music lesson in his life. By the time he was ten, he was already playing the organ on stage. He played for gospel singers like Mahalia Jackson. When he was eleven, he appeared on a TV show with Nat King Cole. He even played a young version of W.C. Handy in a movie in 1958.

His career grew as he worked with many legendary stars. In 1962, he joined the band for Little Richard as an organist. While performing in Hamburg, he met the Beatles. He is often called the "Fifth Beatle" because he worked so closely with them. In 1969, he played the organ and electric piano during their Get Back sessions. The Beatles even gave him a special credit on their single "Get Back." This was the only time they credited a co-performer like that.

Preston also had a very successful career as a solo artist. He won a Grammy Award for his song "Outa-Space." This song helped make the clavinet, a type of keyboard, very popular in funk music.
