Often called the "Prince of Motown" or the "Prince of Soul," he was a central figure in shaping soul music during the 1960s and 1970s. His talent was so significant that he is considered one of the greatest musicians of all time. Gaye's work helped define the Motown sound, a specific style of popular music produced by Motown Records. His influence even reached into later subgenres like quiet storm and neo soul.

Gaye's musical foundation was built in Washington, D.C. He began singing in his church at age four. His father, a minister, often accompanied him on the piano. He participated in several vocal groups during his youth, including the Randall Junior High Glee Club. At Cardozo High School, he joined doo-wop groups like the Dippers and the D.C. Tones.

Before finding solo fame, Gaye worked as a session musician. In the early 1960s, he earned five dollars a week playing drums for various artists. This period of hard work helped him develop the skills needed for his later success.

His professional career took a major turn when he signed with Motown's Tamla subsidiary in 1960. Initially, Gaye focused on jazz standards rather than R&B. He even released his first single under his original surname, "Gay," before adding an "e" to become "Gaye." His early recordings did not find much commercial success. However, he soon transitioned into R&B and began recording hits written by Motown's staff writers. This included collaborations with the famous songwriting team Holland-Dozier-Holland.

Gaye achieved massive stardom through a series of hit singles and collaborative duets. He found success with songs like "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" and "Hitch Hike." He also became famous for his duets with female artists, most notably Tammi Terrell. Together, they recorded iconic tracks such as "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Your Precious Love." One of his most significant solo achievements was the 1968 hit "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." This song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for seven weeks. It sold more than four million copies.

A major turning point occurred in 1971 with the release of his landmark album, *What's Going On*. This record allowed Gaye to break away from the strict control of the Motown production company. He began producing his own albums, including *Let's Get It On* and *I Want You*. This shift toward creative independence allowed him to explore deeper musical themes. After a period living as a tax exile in Europe, he moved to Columbia Records in 1982. There, he released the album *Midnight Love*, featuring his most successful single, "Sexual Healing."

Despite his musical triumphs, Gaye's personal life was marked by significant hardship. He grew up in a crowded neighborhood in Washington, D.C., called the Fairfax Apartments. His home life was difficult due to the behavior of his father, Marvin Gay Sr. Gaye described his father as a "cruel" and "all powerful king" because of the frequent physical discipline he faced. This domestic struggle continued into his adulthood. On April 1, 1984, Gaye was shot and killed by his father at their home in Los Angeles. This tragic event occurred on the eve of Gaye's 45th birthday.
