This reputation stems from his intense playing style, which later influenced many modern rock musicians.

Young's musical development involved a progression through various instruments and ensembles. He began his musical journey playing a plastic ukulele. He later moved to more complex instruments, including a banjo ukulele and a baritone ukulele. Eventually, he transitioned to the guitar, which became his primary instrument. In his early years in Winnipeg, he formed several bands, including The Jades and The Squires. The Squires achieved local success with the song "The Sultan." These early experiences in community centers and dance halls provided the foundation for his professional career.

Young's early life was shaped by both his family background and physical challenges. He was born on November 12, 1945, in Toronto to Scott and Edna Young. His father was a notable journalist, sportswriter, and novelist. During the summer of 1951, Young contracted polio during a major outbreak in Ontario. This illness resulted in partial paralysis on his left side. To assist with his convalescence, his family spent time in the mild climate of Florida. These early experiences in different cities like Winnipeg, Toronto, and Omemee influenced his worldview.

Throughout his long career, Young has achieved remarkable commercial and critical success. He has received numerous Grammy and Juno Awards for his musical contributions. His impact is reflected in the fact that 21 of his albums and singles have been certified gold or platinum in the United States. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has inducted him twice: once as a solo artist in 1995 and once with Buffalo Springfield in 1997.

Beyond music, Young has explored the medium of film. He utilized the pseudonym "Bernard Shakey" to direct or co-direct several films. These projects include Journey Through the Past (1973), Human Highway (1982), and Greendale (2003). He also contributed music to the soundtracks of the films Philadelphia and Dead Man. This demonstrates his interest in combining visual storytelling with his musical compositions. His work in film allows him to extend his artistic vision beyond the recording studio.

Young's legacy is defined by his ability to bridge different musical traditions and eras. He has worked with a wide array of artists, from Joni Mitchell to the band Pearl Jam. His music often addresses social and political themes, such as his song "Ohio," written following the Kent State massacre.
