His early work often used 16mm film to establish these visual themes.

Wenders's journey to cinema was not a direct path. He was born in Düsseldorf on August 14, 1945. His father, Heinrich Wenders, was a surgeon. As a young boy, Wenders took unaccompanied trips to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. He studied medicine at the University of Freiburg and philosophy at the University of Dusseldorf. However, he dropped out of university to move to Paris in 1966. He originally wanted to be a painter. After failing an entry test for a national film school, he worked as an engraver. During this time, he became obsessed with movies and saw up to five films a day.
