Robinson's journey began with a clever way to enter the sport. He was born Walker Smith Jr. in Ailey, Georgia. He later moved to Detroit and then to Harlem. As a teenager, he wanted to join an amateur boxing tournament. He could not legally get an AAU membership card until age 16. To bypass this rule, he used the identity of a youth named Ray Robinson. This name remained his professional identity for the rest of his life. Later, a spectator called him "sweet as sugar," creating his famous nickname.

His professional career was defined by incredible skill and long winning streaks. Robinson turned professional in 1940 at the age of 19. By 1951, his record stood at 129 wins, 1 loss, and 2 draws. He achieved 85 knockouts during that time. From 1943 to 1951, he maintained a 91-fight unbeaten streak. This remains the sixth-longest unbeaten streak in professional boxing history. He won the world welterweight title in 1946 after a 15-round decision against Tommy Bell.

Robinson was a pioneer in championship history. He won the world middleweight title in 1951. After a brief retirement, he returned to the ring two and a half years later. In 1955, he regained the middleweight title. He became the first boxer to win a divisional world championship five separate times. He completed this feat in 1958 by defeating Carmen Basilio. This level of dominance across different years is extremely rare in combat sports.

His life also included service and personal challenges. Robinson served in the United States Army for 15 months. He performed exhibition bouts for troops alongside Joe Louis. During his service, he experienced a period of amnesia after falling down stairs. He later faced difficulties due to racial discrimination in business. He and Joe Louis were denied a liquor distribution license because of their race. These obstacles did not stop his rise to global fame.

Outside the boxing ring, Robinson was a cultural icon. He was known for a classy and flamboyant lifestyle. He is credited as the originator of the modern sports "entourage." An entourage is a group of people who travel with and support a celebrity. He brought a sense of style to the world of professional athletics. Even after his career ended in 1965, his fame persisted. In 2006, the United States Postal Service honored him with a commemorative stamp.

Robinson's impact on boxing history is measured by many different organizations. In 2002, The Ring magazine ranked him number one on its list of the 80 best fighters. The International Boxing Research Organization (IBRO) also named him the best boxer of all time in 2006 and 2019. He proved that a fighter could be both a powerful champion and a stylish entertainer. His career remains a primary example of athletic excellence and longevity.
