Throughout a career spanning from 1947 to 1975, Plante became a major innovator for the sport. He is remembered for changing how goaltenders play and how they protect themselves. His influence was so great that he was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in 2017.

Plante introduced two major tactical changes to the game. First, he was the first NHL goaltender to regularly play the puck outside his crease. This area is the small space directly in front of the net. He did this to support his team's defensemen. He realized that if he controlled the puck, the opposing team could not shoot it at him. This technique is now a standard practice for all goaltenders.

Second, he acted as an on-ice leader by instructing teammates from behind the play. These changes helped his teams manage the game more effectively.

Perhaps his most famous innovation was the use of the goaltender mask. Plante worked with experts to test many different versions of head protection. This included the early designs that eventually became the modern mask and helmet combination used today.

Before his innovation, goaltenders played without face protection. On November 1, 1959, Plante's nose was broken by a shot from Andy Bathgate of the New York Rangers. After receiving stitches, he returned to the game wearing a crude, homemade fiberglass mask. Although his coach was angry, this moment changed hockey safety forever.

Plante's professional journey began in the minor leagues with the Quebec Citadelles in 1947. During this time, he was named the most valuable player after helping his team win the league finals. His success caught the attention of the Montreal Canadiens. He signed a contract with them in 1949 and eventually became their starting goaltender in February 1954.

He spent his most successful years in Montreal, where he became a central figure in the team's history.

His career with the Montreal Canadiens was marked by incredible team success. From 1953 to 1963, the team won the Stanley Cup six times. This included a historic run of five consecutive championship wins.

Plante's individual skill was also recognized through the Vezina Trophy, which he won five times in a row. He finished his professional career with 437 total wins, ranking him seventh among all NHL goaltenders for career victories.

Plante's early life in Quebec shaped his unique path to the NHL. He was born on a farm and was the first of 11 children.

Because he suffered from asthma, he could not skate for long periods. This physical challenge led him to gravitate toward the goaltender position. He grew up playing in bitter cold winters, often using equipment made at home. His father even carved his first hockey stick from a tree root. His mother taught him to knit tuques, which he wore during games for many years.

After his time in Montreal, Plante continued to play for several other teams. He played for the expansion St. Louis Blues in 1968 and the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1970. He also played for the Boston Bruins in 1973. He finished his playing career with the Edmonton Oilers in the World Hockey Association in 1975.
