Plante was a great thinker on the ice. He changed how the game was played in many ways. He was the first goalie to regularly play the puck far from his net. This helped his teammates defend much better. He also helped keep players safe by using a mask.

These changes made the game more exciting for everyone.

Plante used many new ways to help his team win. He would often leave his crease to play the puck. He believed that if he held the puck, the other team could not shoot it. This helped his defensemen manage the game. He also gave instructions to his teammates from behind the play. To stay safe, he worked with experts to test many masks. These masks eventually became the helmets that players wear today.
