He played for many famous teams like the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Sawchuk was known for being incredibly skilled at stopping the puck. He won the Stanley Cup four times during his long career. He also earned the Vezina Trophy four times, which is an award for the best goaltenders. Many people even called him the best goalie ever.

Being a goalie in those years was a very hard job. Sawchuk did not have a backup player to help him. This meant he had to play almost every single day. He often played even when he was hurt or in pain. He dealt with many injuries, like a broken foot and a collapsed lung. He also had about 400 stitches on his face from many different games. To see the puck better, he used a crouching stance. This habit caused him to walk with a permanent stoop for the rest of his life.

Sawchuk's journey began in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in Canada. He was born in 1929 to parents who had moved to Canada from Ukraine.

When he was twelve, he injured his right elbow playing rugby. He did not tell his parents, so the injury did not heal correctly. This left his right arm a few inches shorter than his left arm. Even with this physical challenge, he became a star in hockey. A scout for the Detroit Red Wings saw his talent when he was only fourteen.

His career was full of amazing numbers and big moments. He was the first goalie in the NHL to reach 400 wins. By the time he finished playing, he had 447 regular season wins. He also had 103 shutouts, which is when a goalie lets in zero goals.

In the 1951–52 playoffs, he was nearly impossible to score against. He allowed only five goals in eight games while playing for Detroit. These records helped him become a legend in the sport of hockey.

Today, we remember Sawchuk as a true icon of the game. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1971. The Detroit Red Wings even retired his number 1 jersey in 1994. This means his number will never be worn by another Detroit player.
