Brodeur had a very special way of playing the game. He used a hybrid style of goaltending. This meant he stood up more than players who used the butterfly style. He was also very good at moving the puck with his stick. His quick reflexes and his glove hand were famous.

He was so good at puck handling that the NHL changed its rules. This change limited where goalies could touch the puck. This is sometimes called the "Brodeur rule." He even scored three goals during his career. This is a very rare feat for a goaltender.

His love for hockey started when he was very young. He was born on May 6, 1972, in Montreal. His father, Denis, was also an Olympic athlete. Denis won a bronze medal for Canada in 1956. Martin began his journey playing as a forward. A coach later asked him to try being a backup goalie.

When he was 12, he almost stopped playing hockey. A talk with his brother, Claude, helped him decide to continue. He later studied many different styles to become a smart player.

Brodeur holds many important records in the NHL. He has the most regular season wins with 691. He also holds the records for most losses and most shutouts. A shutout happens when a goalie lets in zero goals.

His success helped the New Jersey Devils become a strong team. He helped them win the Stanley Cup in 1995 and 2000.
