He spent his entire 21-year career in the National Hockey League (NHL) with one franchise. This team began as the Quebec Nordiques and later moved to become the Colorado Avalanche. Sakic was known for his ability to motivate his teammates to play at a very high level. He served as the team captain for many years, starting in 1992. His leadership helped the team move from the bottom of the league to winning championships. People often call him "Burnaby Joe" because of where he grew up.

On the ice, Sakic was a very productive player who excelled at scoring. He was famous for having one of the best wrist shots in the league. This shot was a quick snap that many goalies feared because it was so fast. He was able to score 50 goals in a single season twice. He also reached at least 100 points in six different seasons. By the time he finished playing, he was among the top scorers in NHL history. He reached 1,000 career points and 400 career goals during his long career.

Joe Sakic's journey began in Burnaby, British Columbia, where he was born in 1969. His parents, Marijan and Slavica Šakić, moved to Canada from Croatia. Because his parents spoke Croatian at home, Joe did not learn English until kindergarten. When he was only four years old, he attended his first NHL game. Watching the Vancouver Canucks and Atlanta Flames inspired him to become a player. He modeled his game after his idol, Wayne Gretzky. Even though he was a smaller player, he used great skill to succeed.

His career is filled with many important awards and big victories. He won the Stanley Cup as a player in 1996 and 2001. In 2001, he earned the Hart Memorial Trophy and the Lester B. Pearson Award for being the league's most valuable player. He also helped Team Canada win a gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Sakic was a major part of many international competitions for his country. He even won a third Stanley Cup in 2022 while working as a general manager.

This made him one of only three people to win the Cup with the same team as both a player and a manager.

Today, Sakic's legacy is honored in many different ways by the hockey world. His jersey number 19 was retired by the Avalanche in 2010. He has been inducted into several prestigious groups, including the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012. He is also in Canada's Sports Hall of Fame and the IIHF Hall of Fame. In 2017, he was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in history. He continues to work in hockey management, helping teams build for the future.
