Hayley is a very important leader in the world of sports. She was even elected to the Athletes' Commission for the International Olympic Committee in 2014.

Hayley's journey started on outdoor rinks in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. She was only five years old when she began playing. Until she was 13, she played only on boys' teams. Later, she moved to Calgary, Alberta, to keep playing. In 1991, she played for Alberta at the Canada Winter Games. She scored the winning goal in that tournament. She was also named the Most Valuable Player for that game. This showed how much talent she had at a young age.

Hayley broke many rules and records during her career. She was the first woman to play full-time professional men's hockey in a position other than goalie. In 2003, she became the first woman to score a goal in a men's league in Finland. She played for a team called HC Salamat in the Suomi-sarja league.

She is one of only five athletes to win gold in four straight Winter Games.

Even after she stopped playing professional hockey in 2017, Hayley stayed busy. She decided to go to medical school to become a doctor. She also works with the Toronto Maple Leafs. She started as an assistant director of player development in 2018. Later, she became the senior director for that same role. She even helped create a special hockey stick called the "Wick Stick."
