Her career spanned over two decades of elite international competition. She represented the Canadian women's national team for 23 years. This period lasted from 1994 until her retirement in 2017. During this time, she became the team's career points leader. She recorded 168 goals and 211 assists in 276 games. Her impact on the sport extends far beyond simple statistics.

Wickenheiser's journey began on outdoor rinks in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. She started playing hockey when she was only five years old. For many years, she played exclusively on boys' teams. She continued her development in Calgary, Alberta, after moving there with her family. In 1991, she represented Alberta at the 18-and-under Canada Winter Games. She scored the game-winning goal in that tournament. She was also named the Most Valuable Player for the final game. This early success set the stage for her historic international career.

Her international record is defined by incredible consistency and skill. Wickenheiser earned seven gold medals at the IIHF World Women's Championships. These wins occurred in 1994, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2004, 2007, and 2012. She also competed in five Winter Olympics. At these games, she captured four gold medals and one silver medal.

She is one of only five athletes to win gold in four consecutive Winter Games. Wickenheiser was twice named the tournament MVP at the Olympics. She also held the record for the most Olympic goals scored by a woman.

One of Wickenheiser's most significant achievements was breaking gender barriers in professional leagues. She was the first woman to play full-time professional men's hockey in a position other than goalie. In 2003, she joined HC Salamat in Finland's third-division league, known as the Suomi-sarja.

She became the first woman to score a goal in a men's semi-professional league. She chose European leagues because the style of play was less physical. This allowed her to focus on her skill in a more open game. She also attempted to play in Sweden with clubs like IFK Arboga IK and Eskilstuna Linden.

Beyond professional leagues, Wickenheiser also excelled in Canadian university hockey. She played for the University of Calgary Dinos in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS).

She joined the team during the 2010–11 season to provide leadership to young players. While playing, she also completed a degree in kinesiology. Wickenheiser was highly successful in this setting as well. She finished tied for the conference lead in scoring with 40 points. She was named the CIS player of the year and won the Brodrick Trophy as the league MVP.

Her leadership extended to the highest levels of sports administration. In 2014, she was elected to the International Olympic Committee's Athletes' Commission. She also used her platform to advocate for the growth of women's hockey. At the 2010 World Hockey Summit, she addressed the international status of the sport. She spoke about the talent gap between North American and European players. She noted that North American women had better access to professional leagues and training. Her efforts helped bring attention to the need for more support for women's national programs.

After retiring from professional play in 2017, Wickenheiser transitioned into new professional roles. She chose to pursue medical school to become a physician. Simultaneously, she began working with the Toronto Maple Leafs. She started as the assistant director of player development in 2018. In 2021, she was promoted to senior director of player development. She also collaborated with Verbero Hockey to create the "Wick Stick." This branded equipment was designed specifically for women. Her legacy continues through her work in medicine, management, and equipment design.
