He helped the team win the Stanley Cup in 1991 and 1992.

Lemieux's journey began with a lot of hard work. He grew up in a working class family in Montréal. As a young boy, he practiced hockey in his basement. He and his brothers used wooden spoons as sticks. They even used bottle caps as pucks to play. His father even made a rink on their front lawn. They sometimes practiced on the living room carpet too. This early practice helped him become a star.

His professional career started with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1984. He was the first overall pick in the NHL draft. In his very first game, he scored a goal. He also became the first rookie to win the All-Star Game MVP. Lemieux won many important awards during his time in the league. He won the Hart Trophy three times. He also won the Art Ross Trophy six times. He was a leader for Team Canada too.

Playing professional hockey was often a very hard job for him.

He faced many serious health problems during his career. He had to fight a disease called Hodgkin's lymphoma. He also dealt with bad back pain and other issues. Because of this, he could not play every single game. He retired twice because of these health struggles. However, he always played at a high level when he returned. He even won the scoring title after sitting out a whole season.

Lemieux did much more than just play the game. In 1999, he bought the Pittsburgh Penguins. This helped save the team during a difficult time. He is the only person to win the Stanley Cup as both a player and an owner.
