Many fans called him "the Professor" because he played with such intelligence. He did not rely on throwing the ball at high speeds. Instead, he focused on movement and precise location to fool hitters. This smart way of playing helped him become one of the greatest ever. He played for 23 seasons in Major League Baseball. Most of his career was spent with the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Cubs. His ability to control the game made him a true master of the mound.

Maddux used a very specific way to win his games. He learned from a coach named Ralph Meder to value location over power. This meant he aimed for specific spots to make batters miss. He was a superb control pitcher who rarely gave up walks. In fact, he once threw 51 straight innings without a single walk. He was also a great fielder, which helped him win 18 Gold Gloves. This is the most ever won by any player. He even held a record for the most putouts by a pitcher.

His journey started in San Angelo, Texas, but he grew up in Spain. His father was in the Air Force, so the family moved often. When they returned to Las Vegas, Maddux trained with his brother, Mike. They worked under Ralph Meder to build a strong foundation. Maddux played for Valley High School in Las Vegas. He helped his team win a state championship in 1983. Even though some scouts thought he was too skinny, he proved them wrong. He signed with the Chicago Cubs in 1984 after being drafted.

Maddux finished his career with 355 total wins. He is one of only ten pitchers to reach 300 wins and 3,000 strikeouts. He is also the only one to do that with fewer than 1,000 walks. In 2014, he joined the Baseball Hall of Fame.

His legacy lives on through the way people talk about baseball today.

A writer named Jason Lukehart even created a new term using his name. A "Maddux" is when a pitcher wins a game without letting anyone reach base. The pitcher must also do this in fewer than 100 pitches. Maddux holds the record for doing this 13 times. This shows how efficient and smart he was on the field. He even served as an assistant for the Cubs and the Texas Rangers. His career remains a model of skill and steady hard work.
