He was known for his incredible skill on the mound. People often call him a pioneer of modern pitching. He was a master of both speed and control. Early in his career, he was a very hard thrower. His fastballs were so powerful they actually broke wooden fences. This earned him the nickname "Cy," which came from the word cyclone.

Young used different ways to win games as he grew older. At first, he relied on his amazing speed. His pitches were so fast that his catcher, Chief Zimmer, sometimes put beefsteak in his glove for protection. As his speed slowed down, he learned to use better control. He added a "slow ball" to his style to help his arm. Today, we call this type of pitch a changeup. He used this variety to stay effective even into his forties. This ability to adapt helped him stay in the big leagues for a long time.

His journey began on a farm in Gilmore, Ohio.

Later, he returned to Ohio and played in amateur baseball leagues. He started his professional career in 1890 with the Canton Nadjys. This was a minor league team in Ohio. He soon moved up to the major leagues with the Cleveland Spiders.

Young played for several famous teams during his long career. He played for the Cleveland Spiders from 1890 to 1898. Then, he played for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1899 to 1900. In 1901, he joined the Boston Red Sox. He helped the Red Sox win the World Series in 1903.
