He played 12 seasons for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers. Many fans called him "the Left Arm of God" because he was so talented. He won the Cy Young Award three times, which is a prize for the best pitcher. He was also the National League Most Valuable Player in 1963.

Even though his career was short, he left a huge mark on the game. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. At age 36, he was the youngest player ever chosen for it.

Koufax had to learn how to pitch very quickly.

He was actually a basketball player when he was young. He even captained his high school basketball team. He joined the Dodgers after playing only a few baseball games in college. Because of a special rule, he went straight to the major leagues. He did not play in the minor leagues at all. This was hard because he did not know all the rules of pitching. He had to learn how to use different hand signs to talk to catchers.

His journey to the big leagues was full of surprises.

He grew up in Brooklyn, New York, in a Jewish family. His mother, Evelyn, later married an attorney named Irving Koufax. Sandy took his stepfather's name. While at the University of Cincinnati, he overheard his coach talking about a baseball trip. He told the coach, "I'm a pitcher," to get on the team. A scout for the Dodgers later saw him throw a fastball. The scout said it was like seeing the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Koufax reached amazing heights during his playing years.

He threw four no-hitters during his career. One of those was a perfect game in 1965. He also won the Triple Crown for pitchers three times. This means he led the league in several important stats at once. He led the league in strikeouts four times. He also led in wins and shutouts three times each. His elbow began to hurt very badly from all the hard work. He had to retire from playing when he was only 30 years old.

Koufax was a hero to many people for more than just sports.

He was a very important figure in the American Jewish community. In 1965, he chose to miss a World Series game. He did this because the game fell on Yom Kippur, a Jewish holiday. He also stood up for players' rights. He and teammate Don Drysdale asked for fairer contracts in 1966. Today, his number 32 is retired by the Dodgers. They even built a statue of him at Dodger Stadium in 2022.
