He was a left-handed pitcher who played for 21 seasons in Major League Baseball. Spahn earned 363 career wins during his long time on the mound. This number is the major league record for any left-handed pitcher. He was a very smart player who liked to outwit the people hitting the ball. He once said that pitching is about upsetting the timing of the hitter.

Spahn used a very special way to pitch the ball. He used a famous high leg kick during his windup. This move helped him watch runners standing on first base. It also kept the runners from knowing if he would throw to the plate or to the base. As he grew older, his fastball became slower. He learned to win by changing his speeds and using a screwball. He also relied on great location to keep batters from hitting the ball well.

Spahn's journey began in Buffalo, New York, where he grew up. He originally wanted to be a first baseman in high school. However, he had to become a pitcher because the first base spot was already taken. He grew up to be a hero in the United States Army. He served as a combat engineer during World War II. Because of his service, he was awarded a Purple Heart. He missed three full seasons of baseball while he was in the war.

His career was filled with many amazing numbers and awards.
