Bobby Orr is one of the greatest ice hockey players to ever play the game.

He was born on March 20, 1948, in Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada. As a young child, he was quite small and frail. However, he could skate faster than anyone else his age. This speed helped him change how the game was played. He moved from playing as a forward to playing as a defenceman. A defenceman usually stays back to protect the goal. Orr used his skating to rush forward and score many points.

Orr's way of playing was truly special and new. His coach, Bucko McDonald, encouraged him to use his skills to control the play. He was a great stickhandler and a fast skater. This allowed him to lead offensive rushes from the back. Because of this, he won many famous awards. He won eight Norris Trophies for being the best defenceman. He also won three Hart Trophies for being the most valuable player.

His journey to the pros began in junior hockey. At age fourteen, he joined the Oshawa Generals. He was an all-star for three of his four seasons there. In 1966, he joined the Boston Bruins professional team. The Bruins had not won a Stanley Cup since 1941. With Orr on the team, they won the Cup in 1970 and 1972. He scored the winning goal in both of those big games.

Orr's career had many important firsts for hockey players. His first professional contract was negotiated by an agent named Alan Eagleson. This made Orr the highest-paid rookie in the history of the NHL. His second contract was the first million-dollar deal in the league. He played twelve seasons in total. He spent ten years with the Boston Bruins. He later played two seasons with the Chicago Black Hawks.

Even though he was a star, his career ended quite early. Repeated injuries to his left knee forced him to retire in 1978. He was only 30 years old at the time. After retiring, he faced hard times with money and debt. He had to sell much of what he owned to rebuild. Later, he became a player agent and a scout. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979. The NHL also named him one of the 100 greatest players ever.
