He is widely considered one of the greatest athletes in the history of the sport. Orr changed the game by revolutionizing the role of the defenceman. Traditionally, defencemen stayed near their own goal to protect it. Orr used incredible skating speed and play-making skills to rush forward. He became a scoring threat from the back of the rink. This new style of play transformed how teams used their defensive players.

Orr's unique style relied on several specific physical and technical skills. He was a master stickhandler, which means he had great control over the puck. His skating allowed him to control the flow of the game. He could transition from defense to offense with extreme speed. This ability allowed him to lead offensive rushes deep into the opponent's zone. His coach, Bucko McDonald, encouraged this aggressive style of play. McDonald believed Orr was a natural at defense despite his offensive talents.

Orr achieved many distinct milestones during his professional career. He won a record eight consecutive Norris Trophies. This award is given to the NHL's best defenceman. He also earned three consecutive Hart Trophies. The Hart Trophy is awarded to the league's most valuable player (MVP). In terms of scoring, he was unmatched in his position. Orr remains the only defenceman to win the Art Ross Trophy twice. This trophy is awarded to the league's top scorer. He also holds the record for most points and assists in a single season by a defenceman.

His journey began in the small town of Parry Sound, Ontario. He started organized hockey in 1953 at age five. Though he was a small and frail baby, he quickly became a fast skater. By age twelve, NHL scouts were already watching his play in Ontario. At fourteen, he joined the Oshawa Generals, a junior hockey affiliate. He spent four seasons there and was an all-star for three of them. In 1966, he joined the Boston Bruins. The Bruins had not won a Stanley Cup since 1941. With Orr, they won championships in 1970 and 1972.

Orr's impact on the business of hockey was also significant. His first professional contract was negotiated by an agent named Alan Eagleson. This was one of the first times an agent handled a player's deal. It made Orr the highest-paid rookie in NHL history. His second contract was the first million-dollar contract in the league. These events helped start the era of player agents in professional hockey. However, his career faced a difficult end due to physical struggles. Repeated injuries eventually destroyed his left knee. He was forced to retire in 1978 at the age of 30.

Life after hockey brought both challenges and new beginnings. After retiring, Orr discovered he was in deep debt. He had to sell most of his belongings to rebuild his finances. He also had a legal dispute with his former agent, Alan Eagleson. Orr later helped with investigations that led to Eagleson's fraud convictions. Despite these hardships, Orr remained active in the hockey community. He worked as a scout for several professional teams. He also started his own player agency, the Orr Hockey Group.
